Philip's Encyclopedia 2005 is a new and thoroughly revised edition of the most highly illustrated single-volume encyclopedia. It has five sections: a colour-illustrated Identification Guide to stars and planets, the human body, mammals, birds, butterflies, and trees; an A-Z encyclopedia with 13,000 concise entries, fully reviewed, revised, and updated; a comprehensive History of the World time chart from 15,000 BC to date; a Ready Reference section, providing essential facts and figures in the most accessible manner; and a stunning 32-page colour World Atlas.

The main section of Encyclopedia 2005 features more than 1 3,000 concise and informative entries covering science and technology, the arts, modern and ancient history, religion, medicine, geography and current affairs, sports, and popular culture. The entries are arranged A-Z throughout for rapid fact-finding, while more than 35,000 cross-references and 1500 eye-catching illustrations make the encyclopedia irresistible for browsing. The 200 panels on the countries of the world each comprise fully updated descriptive and historical text, a politically coloured map, a fact box including demographic, economic and political statistics, a locator map and flag. A further 150 boxed features explain subjects of special interest. More than 1000 articles have links to a total of over 1500 carefully selected websites.

The new Identification Guide to stars and planets, the human body, mammals, birds, butterflies, and trees has 1000 colour illustrations with clear, concise captions. It enables the reader to tell a kestrel from a harrier, find the deltoid muscle, spot the constellation of Cassiopeia, distinguish between a cypress tree and a yew, and tell a leopard from a jaguar. It has an index to enable rapid identification.

The unique illustrated Chronology of World History details more than 5000 historical events from the origins of humanity to terrorism in the 21st century. Organized by region and by subject (science and technology, arts and humanities), it shows an instant cross-section of global events at any given moment in time.
