It was summertime and sunshine fell warmly on an old house surrounded by deep canals. A duck had built her nest near the edge of one of the canals and laid her eggs here. She was growing very tired of sitting on her eggs when at last she heard a crack.
One little head popped out, then another and then another. She counted the ducklings and checked the nest. One egg, the largest, had not yet hatched. The mother duck sat on the egg until at last it too cracked open and out tumbled the largest and ugliest duckling
she had ever seen. "That is a big, strong creature," she thought, "but not at all like the others."
